Xavier Rhodes signs a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts

At last, the Indianapolis Colts and their fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Xavier Rhodes has reunited with Kenny Moore and co. It is a 1-year deal worth 6.5 million dollars. This is the second consecutive one-year Colts deal for Rhodes, who will more than double his last year’s salary after leaving his first organization for Indianapolis. After a down year in 2019 for the Vikings, things were murky for Rhodes. He then jumped on board with the Colts for 2020 with a one-year, “prove it” deal of 3 million dollars. Making good on this, he had his best season to date. Playing since 2013, Rhodes has 414 career tackles to this point.

He didn’t break out until 2016 when he had 5 interceptions, but he actually averaged a solid 66.7 rating on PFF in his first two seasons. After a down year in 2015, his dominant 2016 had him at a 73.8 on PFF. Though his numbers look a little stagnant or even worse, he actually graded even better in 2017. Rhodes played like one of the best cornerbacks in the league and he was an integral part to one of the better secondaries in the NFL.

His decline was a disaster from 2018-19. Two sub 55 rating seasons led to his minimal deal with the Colts. Matt Eberflus and the Colts were what Rhodes needed as he was in the top 10, at number 9 in PFF-rated cornerbacks. Posting his highest-rated season, he had 49 tackles, 2 interceptions, and a completion percentage of just 52%. Rhodes became a no-fly zone defender & the built and speedy defender is now back to blue.

What this means for the Colts

A slow showing into the 2021 free agency has left many Colts fans (our Colts Brawlers included) itching for moves. The cap space Indianapolis had left many drooling at the possibilities. Names flew off the board from Monday to Wednesday, but the Colts had made all, but minimal depth moves at best. Marlon Mack then surprisingly resigned! The 3 headed monster of Taylor-Mack-Hines has a new opportunity to become a reality.

As exciting as that is, we had to watch Anthony Walker, Denico Autry, and Jacoby Brissett bear new threads. Autry especially hurt as he signed on to Tennessee and eerily warned of the Colts’ possible regret to not resigning him. These departures aside, Rhodes opens up a new door of possibilities. Our pass defense is once again safe and solid. The better news, though, is the renewed belief in retaining our free agents.

After watching the Colts’ careers of club-leader Walker, sack-specialist Autry, and former starting play-caller Jacoby Brissett all come to an end, Colts fans had to wonder what would become of the other free agents. Most projected that Rhodes would move on, and Mack was an afterthought. Re-upping with them may be the beginning. Names like Justin Houston, T.J. Carrie, and T.Y. Hilton are the most longed-for Colts to return. It’ll remain to be seen whether the Colts can retain more free agents, the Ghost (Hilton) especially.
