There’s of course going to be a lot of questions about who PJ Walker is. PJ Walker has exploded
onto the scene as the starting QB for the Houston Roughnecks, but where did he come from? How did
he end up in the XFL? Surely an exciting player such as Walker should have a spot on an NFL roster as a
backup at least. Right?

College Career

Phillip “PJ” Walker is from Elizabeth, New Jersey and attended Elizabeth High School. At the end
of Walker’s High School career he had received  offers from Temple, East Carolina, Massachusetts, Rutgers, Toledo, and Connecticut. He eventually signed with Coach Matt Rhule (Now the Carolina Panther’s HC) at Temple. Walker began his Temple career in 2013 as the backup to Connor Reilly. Walker eventually replaced Reilly as the starter for the Week 6 game against Cincinnati. In Walker’s first appearance he went 12/22 54.5 PCT 200 YDS 2 TD 1INT. The next week he would get his first win against Army going 10/16 62.5 PCT 203 YDS 2 TD 1 INT. Walker’s best game of that season would be in a loss against Central Florida going 26/44 59.1 PCT 382 YDS 4 TD 1 INT. Overall Temple would only win one other game against Memphis that season and Walker would end his 2013 season 152/250 60.8 PCT 2084 YDS 20 TD 8 INT. Over the next 3 years (2014-2016) PJ Walker would continue to lead the Temple Owls as their starting Quarterback. All together through his 4 years at Temple Walker racked up 830/1458 56.9 PCT 10,668 YDS 74 TD 44 INT for a QB rating of 129.1. Along with his stats Walker also led Temple to 2 division titles (The American Athletic Conference East 2015, 2016), one Conference title (The American Athletic Conference 2016), and 2 bowl games The Boca Rotan Bowl in 2015 where they lost to the Toledo Rockets 32-17 and the Military Bowl in 2016 against the Wake Forrest Demon Deacons where they also lost 34-26. Walker would enter the Draft after the 2016 season.

NFL Career

Walker would then go undrafted in the 2017 draft, eventually signing with the Indianapolis Colts.
During the 2017 pre-season, Walker was slated behind Andrew Luck and Jacoby Brissette. After the pre-
season Walker was waived and then signed to the Colts practice squad where he spent the entire 2017
season. The same would happen during the 2018 season and then again in 2019 when he would
be waived for the final time. Only one other NFL team would try to sign Walker and that would be the
Pittsburgh Steelers after he had already signed with the XFL. The Steelers wanted to sign Walker
because they were about to play the Baltimore Ravens and felt Walker’s skill set could help them
prepare for their upcoming matchup with the Raven’s starting QB Lamar Jackson. The XFL blocked this of course considering Walker was already under contract with the XFL. Walker would then eventually go on to sign with the XFL being assigned to the Houston Roughnecks.

Walker was not just handed the starting position he had to earn it and beat out former Oakland Raider backup Connor Cook. Since then PJ Walker has been putting on a show going 67/105 748 YDS 11 TD 1 INT. For Walker the ultimate goal has not changed according to an interview he did with Sarah Barshop a Staff Writer for ESPN. Walker wants to be an NFL Quarterback. With the way he is
currently playing you can definitely argue that Walker should at least be a back-up on a team somewhere and if he continues this level of play one would suspect that the NFL should be calling real
