As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for their home opener there will be a multitude of factors to watch for that will determine the outcome of their season. These factors will not be the the ultimate determination but will provide insight.  The home opener will tell a lot about the Chiefs season, because Houston is a formidable foe. Kansas City will be tested in many areas but these will be the most important areas to watch.

Offensive Speed

At times last year, the Chiefs offense was more of school bus than a race car. It’s not crucial for the Chiefs to always be in a track meet, but has been beneficial. In a run-it-back season, it’s very important for them to not be sluggish out of the gate.

During last years’ post season, we saw the Chiefs have to come back in games because the offense got such a slow start. The Chiefs have proven that they can continually comeback but this is not a trend that should be tested this year.

Defense Power

The Chiefs team defense ranked 7th at the end of the 2019 season. Defense became a crucial part of their win in the Super Bowl. However, at the beginning of the 2019 season there were a lot of question marks. Most notably, whether Steve Spagnuolo was the correct coordinator.

The defense will need to continue this trend and prove that they can stay consistent. At times this year the offense will need to lean on the defense. They need to be prepared to help when the time comes. That time may come early this season against Houston.

Rookie Power

The Chiefs have two rookies that will be called upon early and often to help this team. The first rookie that can an immediate impact is Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Most are predicting that he will become the Chiefs feature back. He could bring that offensive power at the running back position that Reid has been looking for.

Second rookie that can have immediate impact is Willie Gay Jr. There is no secret that the Chiefs have struggled to find solid linebackers. Gay Jr. could be a game changer for Spagnuolo’s defense and make a strong front seven.

Another rookie to watch this year is Tershawn Wharton. He was an undrafted free agent that Veach found for depth. However, now he has been so impressive this year that he is replacing Mike Pennel. If Wharton can prove himself then he will see a lot of playing time in the rotation.

There is a lot to keep an eye on the in Chiefs home opener. The most important thing is the teams continuity and focus on this run-it-back year. Patrick Mahomes and company need to prove that they are the same team from last year.
