Saquon Barkley went down at the beginning of the second quarter against the Chicago Bears. What does it mean for the Giants going forward?

New York Giants fans’ hearts stopped momentarily on Sunday evening when Saquon Barkley went down with what looked like an arm injury. He very quickly got up to his feet and made his way to the sideline. Dion Lewis then stepped in for the next play of the game whilst Big Blue fans everywhere panicked.

Barkley very quickly recovered and was straight back into the game on the following play. The immediate panic was finally over and the Giants faithful had their main man back and seemingly healthy. It is the first play of the second quarter and Barkley finds an opening near the right sideline. Jubilation quickly turned into despair for Joe Judge and his young team.

Nightmare scenario

Barkley was down injured again and this time it looked a lot more serious with Saquon holding his knee. The pain on his face was more than noticeable.

The Giants’ best player was then helped off the field and into the locker room. Subsequently, Barkley was ruled out of the game with a suspected knee injury. The Giants have said that he will be looked at in Chicago and will then be re-evaluated tomorrow.

Whilst it may well be the end of the former Penn State running backs’ season, there will be a slight hope in New York that it may not be as bad as first feared. The optimism was due to Barkley leaving the field of play with help from his teammates and not requiring a cart.

Who can fill the crater sized void?

The Giants other running back Dion Lewis took over for the remainder of the game, they do also have Wayne Gallman on the roster however he was  named inactive today.

If Saquon is out for the remainder of the season, Joe Judge and Jason Garrett may have a look at potential trade candidates. They make also take a look at free agency to bolster their running back committee.

One name that really stands out is Devonta Freeman, the former Atlanta Falcon could be a short term solution to the Giants woes if the worst case scenario turns into a reality.
