The Pittsburgh Steelers have some tough decisions to make with their wide receiver’s room heading into the 2020 NFL season.

Unlike last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a deep, talented, and, most importantly, proven group of wide receivers to rely on as they head into training camp. Currently, they have 10 wide receivers on their roster. They are going to be trimming that number down to five or six. So, who will those five or six be?

Who are the 10 wide receivers on the roster right now?

The 10 wide receivers on the Pittsburgh Steelers right now include the likes of Deon Cain, James Washington, Saeed Blacknall, Anthony Johnson, Amara Darboh, Chase Claypool, Quadree Henderson, Ryan Switzer, Diontae Johnson, and Juju Smith-Schuster. It seems that Juju Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Diontae Johnson, and Chase Claypool are locks to make the roster, so that means that only one to two of the rest of the group can make the roster. Thus, who will they ultimately be?

What would their wide receiver’s room look like if they choose to keep six?

The Steelers often keep six wide receivers on their opening day 53-man roster. Four of the six spots are locked up by Smith-Schuster, Washington, Johnson, and Claypool. In this scenario, they would add two more to that list. Having said that, the favorites for those two spots are likely to be Ryan Switzer and Deon Cain based on being proven entities.

Ryan Switzer is a guy they like because of his sure hands and his excellent chemistry with their franchise quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger. Switzer primarily works from the slot, and he believes that he does well in that position. Switzer will almost definitely make the roster assuming the Steelers keep six wide receivers.

Deon Cain is a player that showed a high upside for the Steelers. Last year, he was immediately thrusted into a role to a team that was hurting at the wide receiver position. This happened right after signing to the Steelers from being on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

Cain appeared in six games for the Steelers last season. He caught five balls for 72 yards off of only six targets. He showed reliable hands on the deep ball, which would give him a strong case for a spot on this roster with a healthy Roethlisberger.

Which wide receivers would they keep if they have room for only five?

In this case, it would come down to a battle between the just talked about Ryan Switzer and Deon Cain. And, in that battle, ultimately, they would choose Switzer.

Switzer is who they would choose simply because he’s got that very strong chemistry with Big Ben. He also has very soft and reliable hands. Still, with all this being said, though, expect Cain to give Switzer a run for his money.

Final thoughts

Overall, this wide receiver’s room should be in a much better situation than last year with the addition of second-round draft pick Chase Claypool and the infusion of Big Ben back in the lineup, as last year was a year that saw it struggle due to lack of depth with the departure of Antonio Brown, inexperience, and a plague of injuries, including at the quarterback position.
