On January 29th, 2017, Jed York CEO of the 49ers made a head-scratching decision to many and hired John Lynch to run the team. Lynch never worked in a front office until the 49ers called, and with the recent hires, it was seen as another bad decision by the organization.

A little over a week later, the 49ers bring in top offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to be the head coach. The plan for both of them was to start building a foundation. It was going to take time and the organization knew that. Here’s a look at part 2 of the 49ers story.

2017 Off-Season

The off-season was in full swing, as the first signing of the John Lynch era was K’Waun Williams on a one year deal. Next was DT Earl Mitchell on a 4-year deal. Not an expensive deal when it came to 4-year contracts, however with a new defensive scheme change Mitchell was brought in to help.

Later on in the off-season, the Niners were looking to replace Kaepernick and did so with Brian Hoyer. Hoyer and Shanahan were together back in 2014 with the Browns when the team went 7-9. The idea was to bring in a veteran leader to help a young team out early. They also wanted someone who knew the scheme.

They also brought in Marquise Goodwin as a keep threat in the offense. Next was Pierre Garcon as a more possession wideout, someone who can make tough catches in key situations.

A huge signing for them was bringing in former Ravens fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Shanahan really puts a premium on having a good fullback in his offense, and Juszczyk was the best in the game. The versatility he would bring to the offense as more than a true fullback would make this team so much better.

Another thing that mattered to the Niners was special teams, that’s why they made sure to sign Robbie Gould. Gould, was a great kicker and another underrated signing this off-season.

The next phase of the off-season was soon to come with a top 5 pick in the draft.

2017 Draft and UDFA

To continue building the foundation was the draft, with a top 5 pick, there was tons of pressure to get it right. Luckily for them, the Bears really liked Mitch Trubisky and traded up for him. With the 3rd pick, the 49ers took Solomon Thomas and later moved up for Reuben Foster. Both didn’t really work out but what the 49ers did later was really impressive.

The 49ers got the steal of the draft taking George Kittle in the 5th round of the draft. Kittle is the most important player to the 49ers offense to this day, that worked out pretty well. Other notable picks in the draft included Ahkello Witherspoon, CJ Bethard and Trent Taylor

In UDFA they picked up names like Matt Breida, Kendrick Bourne, and Nick Mullens.

Overall, it was a great start to their foundation. The first off-season for any GM will be the hardest one but the key was getting on the right track, and that is exactly what they did.
