Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is set to become a free agent. His former division rivals are “hot” on him. Why it all makes sense.

The NFL is looked at as a passing league, which helps quarterbacks during contract time. The reigning NFL passing champion, Jameis Winston, sees himself in a rather odd situation. Winston threw for 33 touchdowns and 5,109 yards. He set records, but not the right kind. He was the first quarterback to throw 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

It leaves his team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an odd position.

On Monday, reports came out from Peter King of NBC Sports that it is “likely” the former #1 pick will be leaving Tampa Bay in 2020.

It leaves the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looking for a new face under center. Tampa Bay is a rather appealing destination for free agents in general. With a receiving core under the elite category that features a top wide receiver in Mike Evans and a rising star in Chris Godwin, a scheme built by Bruce Arians, and close to $80 million in cap space. The Buccaneers are a team to watch throughout free agency.

The Buccaneers Options

This year’s quarterback free agency class includes veterans such as Tom Brady, Teddy Bridgewater, and Philip Rivers. As a general manager told Mike Sando of The Athletic, “I am hearing Tampa Bay is hot on Bridgewater.” This time last year, the former 1st round pick was visiting the Miami Dolphins but ultimately decided to stay in New Orleans as the backup to Drew Brees.

The 27-year-old started five games last year while Brees was out injured with a thumb injury and won every game. This includes a 31-24 win over the Buccaneers. In these five games, Bridgewater posted 1,384 passing yards and nine touchdowns.

Questions are surrounding the former Minnesota quarterback. Since 2015, the former Louisville quarterback has only thrown 221 passes. Comparing this number to Winston, he had 626 pass attempts in 2019 alone.

Bridgewater is a massive upgrade in the turnover category. After throwing only two interceptions in his 196 attempts, which equates to only a 1.0 interception rate. If the Buccaneers were to sign Teddy Bridgewater indeed, he would bring a component in controlling the game, which would help out a Buccaneers defense that had an offense producing continual turnovers.

Bruce Arians the QB Whisperer

Bruce Arians has been nicknamed as the quarterback whisperer. He helped develop quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, and Andrew Luck, and even Carson Palmer in the backend of his career. Arians had the 36-year-old Palmer for over 4,600 yards with 35 touchdowns to go with a 104.6 passer rating in his 2015 season. If anyone can unlock Teddy Bridgewater’s full potential, it is Arians.
