CLEVELAND, Ohio — January 5th, 2003. In other words, the last time the Cleveland Browns appeared in a playoff game. A game in which the Pittsburgh Steelers outscored the Browns in the fourth quarter 22-9 to secure a wild card win 36-33. Eighteen years later, the Cleveland Browns will return to the scene they last played a postseason game.

For Browns fans, those years will be the longest, painful eighteen years of their fanhood. A fanbase that witnessed a 1-15 season and a 0-16 season. For the younger generation, those eighteen years of terrible football and dysfunctional organizational decisions are all they’ve ever known when it comes to the Cleveland Browns.

In 2020, Cleveland’s fortunes may have finally changed. For the first time in almost twenty years, the Browns will compete in a playoff game. On Sunday night, they will once again face their archrival, the Pittsburgh Steelers on wild card weekend. Full circle. The importance of Sunday night’s game can’t be emphasized enough for the future of the Browns. In reality, having a winning season for the first since 2007 is impressive enough. In a year where COVID-19 rages and continues to have a major impact on the NFL season, including on the Browns, winning double-digit games is all the more remarkable, all led by rookie head coach Kevin Stefanski.

For the Browns fans, this season has given them something they haven’t had in a very long time relating to the Browns: hope. Hope that the dark days are over. A new era where the Browns regain a winning culture. That’s what Sunday night’s Cleveland Browns’ playoff game symbolizes for fans everywhere.
