Young Shep no more

With Zak DeOssie and Eli Manning both now retired, Sterling Shepard is left as the longest serving New York Giant. Shepard will be hoping to cement his place as the Giants WR1 this season as 2019 was a season to forget.

Statistically, he had the worst season of his NFL career.  This was due to an influx of injuries that sidelined him, beginning with a concussion in Week 1. This was disappointing for Shepard as he had great expectations going into the season, following Odell Beckham Jr’s trade to the Cleveland Browns. No doubt the organization too, had hoped he could have filled the void left by OBJ.

The Giants have clearly been missing that dynamic wide receiver since Beckhams’ departure. Shepard will believe he now can not only fill the void but excel in his role as WR1 this season. He will know however, there is a lot of healthy competition in the WR room with veteran Golden Tate and Darius Slayton who had a great rookie year last season both fighting for the number 1 spot.

2020 will be the most important year of Shepards career. He will look to exceed the expectations of the organization and fanbase. However, staying healthy will clearly be half the battle for the Oklahoma native.

If he can stay on the field, head coach Joe Judge will be expecting big things from Shepard. He finished the 2019 season with 57 receptions for 576 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. Joe Judge and Offensive Co-Ordinator Jason Garrett will no doubt be hoping the 27 year old can lead big blue in receptions this year.

On top of this, they will also need leadership from Shep’ on offense and particularly in the wide receiver room. The coaching staff will hope he can mentor Darius Slayton and help mould him into a real weapon on offense. If Shepard can stay healthy in this career defining season, the Giants will hope to capitalize on his versatility as a slot and boundary receiver. In doing so Sterling Shepard might make 2020 a year to remember.
