Zach Ertz is waiting on a contract extension from the Philadelphia Eagles, but he may have to wait

Adam Caplan reported on the Inside the Birds podcast that Zach Ertz‘s deal won’t be done until San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle signs his extension.

It appears that Philadelphia wants to extend Ertz’s contract, but wants to see how much Kittle will sign for. The expectation is Kittle is going to set the market on tight ends around the NFL. Since Ertz is considered one of the top five tight ends, he will be in that discussion as well.

Ertz should be considered one of the best tight ends in the league because of his production during his seven-year career. He’s appeared in three Pro Bowls from 2017 through last season. Not only that, but he’s been the Eagles’ leading receiver each year since 2016. Ertz set the NFL tight end’s record for catches in a season in 2018 with 116. That same year, he had a career-high 1,163 yards and eight touchdowns.

Why Wait to Pay Zach Ertz?

Kittle has simply put up incredible numbers as he’s been the best receiver on the 49ers the past two seasons. He recorded at least 85 catches for 1,000 yards in both 2018 and 2019. Kittle has also been praised as being a good blocking tight end as well. His versatility in San Francisco makes him arguably the best tight end in the game.

Another concern the Eagles have is figuring out what to do about Dallas Goedert on the roster. Goedert has two more seasons on his contract before being an unrestricted free agent in 2022. He had a breakout season last year with 58 catches, 607 yards, and five touchdowns. This makes life tougher for the Eagles as they might have to pay two tight ends good money since Ertz is also an unrestricted free agent in 2022.

Should Philadelphia Move on from Ertz or Goedert?

This is not as simple as many might think. Ertz is going to command big money depending on Kittle’s contract. In terms of talent, Ertz is on the same level as Kittle.

Goedert is developing into a nice talent who could put up similar numbers to Ertz. Carson Wentz has proven to love his security blankets at tight end. For Philadelphia, tight end might be the most important offensive weapon for Wentz.

Giving Zach Ertz a contract extension makes sense, due to the chemistry between him and Wentz. Wentz had cycled through multiple receivers because of injuries, but Ertz has always been there for him. It would be tough for Philadelphia to let Ertz walk with his friendship with Wentz.

On the flip side, Goedert is the cheaper option for the future. While he has been a nice player for Philadelphia, he will not get the same money that Kittle and Ertz will want. Goedert could sign a long-term deal with Philadelphia, but he would take less money since he’s not as proven as Ertz.

Regardless of how Philadelphia handles the situation, Wentz is going to have great talent at tight end which is a good problem to have.
