Nick Bosa is done for the year. Dee Ford is out indefinitely. Should the 49ers trade for Yannick Ngakoue to mitigate the loss on the edge?

The San Francisco 49ers know how important the pass rush is to their defense. The unit made a massive leap after adding Nick Bosa and Ford. But, the 49ers can’t count on Dee Ford to return. And their depth is lacking a true threat. Should the 49ers trade for Yannick Ngakoue?

The Player

The Minnesota Vikings acquired Yannick Ngakoue from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a second-round pick in 2021 and a conditional fifth in 2022. He signed a one-year, $12 million deal to start the season. Since then, the Vikings are winless and may be looking at a rebuild. In contrast, Ngakoue has played well after a poor Week one outing.

He has a sack and forced fumble in each of the last two games. And despite playing in his fifth NFL season, he is just 25 years old. Ngakoue made the Pro Bowl in 2017, recording 12 sacks and six forced fumbles. He has been productive since that breakout campaign too. Ngakoue produced nine sacks and four forced fumbles, last season.

He is a speed rusher. The veteran is explosive, listed at 6’2” and 250. Ngakoue is similar to Dee Ford with better career stats. Ngakoue has 39.5 sacks and 16 forced fumbles to Ford’s 37 sacks and 11 FFs, in one less season. The Vikings have a versatile pass rusher who would fit well into the LEO position.

The Team

Nick Bosa is done for the year. Dee Ford is out indefinitely. The addition of Ezekiel Ansah is not enough on the edge. The 49ers like Kerry Hyder and Ronald Blair will be back. But they do not have a tested, healthy speed rusher like Ngakoue.

Therefore, San Francisco should trade for the edge rusher. A 2021 third round pick an a 2022 fifth-round pick may be enough to bring him in. The 49ers made a similar move last year, trading for Emmanuel Sanders. They sent third and fourth-round picks to the Denver Broncos. John Lynch can mitigate injuries by adding a player maker like the Pro Bowler. After a 27 point win without a busload of starters, the 49ers season is not over.
