The Dallas Cowboys address their safety position with the signing of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to a one-year deal worth $4 million.

The Dallas Cowboys have lost essential pieces to their defensive unit this offseason. Cornerback Byron Jones left to sign a massive contract with the Miami Dolphins. They lost two defensive linemen with defensive end Robert Quinn to the Chicago Bears and Maliek Collins to the Las Vegas Raiders. Dallas has been in dire need of a playmaking safety for several years. New head coach Mike McCarthy brought in a familiar face for the job signing Ha Ha Clinton Dix to a one-year deal. McCarthy was named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in January.

It’s the second consecutive season the Cowboys have signed a veteran safety in the offseason. In 2019, Dallas signed George Iloka, former Cincinnati Bengals free safety. He was released before the start of the season. Xavier Woods was the starter last year pulling two interceptions in 15 starts.

Clinton-Dix was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2014 when McCarthy was the head coach. He played four seasons for the Packers before being traded to the Washington Redskins in 2018. After playing in nine games for the Redskins, Clinton-Dix left Washington to sign a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears in 2019.

He was signed in Chicago to replace safety Adrian Amos, who left to sign a lucrative deal with the Packers. Clinton-Dix finished his short stint with the Bears hauling in two interceptions, five pass breakups, 78 tackles, and two fumble recoveries. In 2019, Clinton-Dix graded out at a 74.2, according to Pro Football Focus.

During his six-year career, Clinton-Dix has not missed a single game and started all but six games. The veteran safety made the Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro in 2016 with the Packers. In those six years, he has collected 16 interceptions, 33 pass breakups, 5.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles.

According to Jane Slater of NFL Network, Clinton-Dix signed a one-year, $4 million deal with $2.5 million guaranteed. The former first-round pick will be a cheap addition to the back end of the defense. Dallas will likely look to the draft for additional help at cornerback and possibly safety. Clinton-Dix, 27, will be an immediate impact for the Cowboys in 2020.
