After struggling most of the season, rookie driver Cole Custer wins his first Cup race at Kentucky Speedway.

Rough Start to the Rookie Season

Going into the race at Kentucky Speedway, Cole Custer and the 41 Stewart Haas Racing team only had two top 10’s out of 16 races this season. Custer’s rookie class competitors have been very strong to this point in the 2020 season thanks to the “Big 3” which includes Custer, Tyler Reddick, and Christopher Bell. These three drivers got that nickname due to showing complete dominance in the X-finity series this past year. In 2020, the other two rookie drivers have out-performed Custer at almost every aspect of racing. However, after Sunday, Cole now has something that none of these drivers have in 2020, their first Cup win.

Dramatic Win for the Rookie

For most rookie drivers in their Cup rookie season, winning a Cup series race is something very rare. The last Cup rookie driver to do it was Chris Buscher in 2016. However, that was due to a rain and fog-shortened race at Pocono Raceway. Most rookies put themselves in a situation to win due to mother nature. Custer not only raced his way to the win, but also did it in the most dramatic fashion. Due to a late caution, there was a green, white, checkered (Two lap shootout for the win). By the time the drivers took the white flag, it was a four-wide battle between Ryan Blaney, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr, and Cole Custer on the outside of the four. After contact was made between the other drivers, Custer was able to stick the high groove in turn one and pull away.

Custer Qualifies for the All-Star Race

To follow the common theme of rare and many firsts for a rookie with the win on Sunday, Custer now qualifies for the all-star race this Wednesday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. Before the win, Custer would have been forced to race in the all-star open and hoped to race his way into the main feature race. If Custer were to not race in, then he would have been a long shot for the fan vote. If Custer’s win wasn’t already turning things around, he now gets a shot to race for the one Million prize.
