The Pittsburgh Steelers have released linebackers Anthony Chickillo and Mark Barron and wide receiver Johnny Holton Monday as the NFL free agency period begins.

These cuts come as no surprise to Pittsburgh Steelers fans and analysts. All three players were letdowns in 2019, and with the Steelers’ horrendous cap situation being what it is, cuts would have to be made.

Chickillo was the most expensive player from this list. His release frees nearly $5M in cap space for Pittsburgh. In his career with the Steelers Chickillo was responsible for 7.5 sacks in his reserve role. In 2019, amid missing time to a domestic violence case, he recorded just a half sack.

Barron was brought in to aid in pass coverage for the Steelers’ linebacking corp. With just one interception to his name, Pro Football Focus graded Barron at an abysmal 53.9. Barron’s release gives the Steelers an extra $5.25M in cap space.

Holton turned heads with his blazing speed in the preseason, but the 28-year-old was unable to take advantage of injuries. He caught just three passes on 15 targets.

After giving edge defender Bud Dupree the franchise tag, the Steelers are still in a struggle against the cap. However, these moves do provide some relief. Expect Kevin Colbert and the Steelers front office to restructure Ben Roethlisberger, Maurkice Pouncey and possibly David DeCastro’s contracts to aid in this regard. More cuts could be incoming as well. Thought the team is adamant in bringing back tight end Vance McDonald, he and others could hit the market soon.

How is the season gonna start. The fans can't come to see the Steelers play. That is gonna look weird. They like to hear the noise but they can't.
