The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired defensive lineman Chris Wormley and a 2021 seventh-round pick for their 2021 fifth-round pick.

Friday morning, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a rare inter-division trade with their biggest rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. Chris Wormley heads to Pittsburgh to join a defensive line that recently saw Javon Hargrave depart for the Philadelphia Eagles. Smart teams load up on the defensive line, and both of these teams are perfect examples of it. When was the last time you heard of a trade within the division? All we hear about when discussing possible trades is they won’t trade within the division. Many times teams won’t deal with the conference.

Eric Decosta strikes again

In his second off-season as the full-time general manager, Eric Decosta has turned the Baltimore Ravens back into a super bowl contender. Last off-season, Decosta was able to acquire veterans that helped the Ravens go 14-2, such as Mark Ingram, Marcus Peters, and Earl Thomas. The Ravens came into the 2020 off-season knowing that they are legitimate Super Bowl contenders and need to add even more premium talent. Somehow, someway, the Ravens have gotten unbelievably more talented without giving up much draft capital at all.

Going back to the point of smart teams taking advantage of weak front offices, the Ravens did it again. This time the Jacksonville Jaguars are the victims. The Ravens were able to acquire star defensive lineman Calais Campbell for a fifth-round pick. Later, with Campbell on the roster, Wormley was no longer an essential piece. Baltimore sent Wormley and a seventh-round pick in 2021 to Pittsburgh for a fifth-round pick in 2021. It means that all the Ravens had to do to replace Wormley with Campbell was give a seventh-round pick in 2021 to the Steelers, and push a fifth-round pick to 2021. These moves signal that the brainpower in Baltimore is going to allow this team to be a contender for years to come.

Pittsburgh adds to the trenches

The Steelers did not give up much to get Chris Wormley from the Baltimore Ravens. Pittsburgh essentially moved down in two rounds in next year’s draft to acquire a valuable rotational defensive lineman who provides excellent depth. Football is changing, that is indisputable, but the trenches are still an essential part of the game. While Wormley may not be a starter, he provides depth for a team that just lost a starting defensive lineman. Also, Steelers defensive lineman, Stephon Tuitt, has never played a full season of NFL football. Wormley may need to play significant snaps.
