The Green Bay Packers have gotten the party started in the annual spending spree in the NFL known as free agency. Moments ago ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Christian Kirksey, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, has agreed to a 2-year, $16 million dollar deal with the Packers.

Kirksey previously played in Cleveland under current defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, so there is an obvious familiarity with Kirksey the player and the person. He will fill the void left when the Packers opted to let last year’s starting linebacker Blake Martinez walk in free agency. Kirksey possesses more physical tools than Martinez in terms of speed and quickness, which was an issue at times for Martinez covering tight ends and running backs out of the backfield. The biggest issue for Kirksey has been his health the past two seasons in which he played a total of 9 games. When healthy he produced a remarkable total of 148 and 138 combined tackles and assists in 2016 and 2017. If he can return to this form, the Packers got themselves a steal.

What moves are next for Brian Gutekunst and Green Bay? Cory Littleton? Nick Kwiatkowski? More offensive help for Aaron Rodgers? More is sure to come…and soon.
