Tampa Bay Lightning vs Boston Bruins

After a very entertaining and somewhat surprising first round, we now get to look forward to two brand new heavyweight match ups. First off, the Tampa Bay Lighting will face off against the Boston Bruins, in what could very easily have been the Eastern Conference Final. Boston dropped significantly in the round robin and gave them a worse seed. Goal-tending will be the difference in this series, both of these squads are deep from the top line to their last defense-man, and not to mention they’re very well rested.

If Halak can out play Vasilevsky, the Bruins have a chance to make yet another run for the Stanley Cup. There’s no doubt that this is going to be a dog fight of a series, with two unbelievably talented squads colliding trying to prove themselves worthy of the Cup. Pretty decent chance that the winner of this series finds themselves in the finals. The guys in the locker room know that too.

Recent Heartbreak

Both of these teams experienced heartbreak last year. The Lightning broke the record for most regular season wins, only to be swept in the first round by the Blue Jackets. The Bruins lost in the Cup Final to the Blues in game 6, in their own barn. Whether it’s two wins, or 16 wins away from the cup, it’s certain that both of these teams can still taste it. Steven Stamkos is a question mark for the Lightning, hopefully they can get him back in the line-up by mid-series.

That would be a massive boost for them. For the Bruins on the other hand, everyone is rolling. It seems as though Pastrnak will also be good to go for this match up. Its tough to see this series being done before game 7, this will be a fight to the death, where the best goalie will move on.

New York Islanders vs Philadelphia Flyers

We watched Barry Trotz and his group dismantle the Panthers. Then proceed to do the same to his former team as the Isles blanked the Capitals 4-0 to win their series comfortably 4-1. It seems as though everyone on this Islanders team has bought in to the system. They are doing what ever it takes to win. Even if that means boring your opponent to sleep at times. The style of play Trotz enforces isn’t particularly entertaining, but it seems to be getting the job done.

Pure grit and determination is on display as they continue to outwork the opposing teams. Looks like the offence is clicking more than in recent memory as well, they like to play all four lines to keep the legs fresh and it’s working. If they can continue to get production from Beauvillier, Eberle and the big studs like Bailey, it will be difficult for Philly to match the offence considering the Isles proven defensive style.

Can Philadelphia Keep Up

The Flyers were the hottest team coming into the bubble, and played so in the round robin as well. Expect them to amplify that intensity against this feisty New York squad. If they play how they did versus the Canadiens, they are in some deep trouble. Philadelphia needs to do two things right in order to win this series. One being; their power play needs to get going, Couturier, Giroux and Voracek are lights out when they’re into it, and so far they haven’t been clicking like they’re used to.

Also, look out for Carter Hart to stand on his head in clutch times’ just like when he shut out the Habs in back to back games, if he can keep it consistent the Flyers have a good shot at the Eastern Conference Final. This is going to be a very chippy series. There’s a chance we will see our first over/under set below 5 this playoffs.
