Before we get into the best bets for the Tampa Lightning vs New York Islanders NHL Eastern Conference Final matchup, here is a quick look at how both teams got here.

Second Round Recap

Sorry Boston Fans

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been waiting quite some time to find out who their opponent will be. After brushing off the Bruins in abrupt fashion, the Lightning are a well-rested and very confident unit.

Andrei Vasilevskiy substantially outplayed Jaroslav Halak and Tampa proved too deep for Boston in this match up. Shortening what most would’ve thought to be a lengthy nail-biting series.

RIP Flyers

The Islanders found themselves in a similar position, going up 3-1 versus the Philadelphia Flyers. Yet, they managed to blow the lead after two straight overtime losses.

New York handily won game 7, a 4-0 domination, in typical Barry Trotz fashion. They continue to completely smother their opponent to death, which made it tough for the Flyers to get anything going.

Thomas Greiss didn’t face too many chances but still earned the shut out. Both goalies have played well, it will be interesting to see who they put between the pipes in Game 1.

Eastern Conference preview

Tampa Bay Depth

All lines for the Lightning are exceeding expectations, and amplifying production for their squad to make a good run at the COVID Cup. Guys like Coleman, Sergachev and Gourde have been spitfires and really spicing up the line-up.

Brayden Point might be the most electrifying player left in the bubble. Every time he’s on the ice he makes an impact. Not even mentioning their stud goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy who has yet to be solved all play-offs.

This is the best put together team in the East, but the Isles are rolling and anything can happen in the game of hockey.

Islanders lockdown

Barry Trotz, once again, got his players to buy in. And it is paying off.

By no means are they the best team on paper but everyone in that locker room believes in the system. All four lines and six defensemen are in constant flow. The minutes are spread out and they’re getting scoring from everywhere.

They put so much pressure on teams with non-stop cycling of the puck in the offensive zone and quick feet end-to-end.

Additionally, they only took 13 penalties all series against the Flyers and killed every one of them. It will be interesting to see if they can continue this dominant play style against Tampa. Key pieces like Matthew Barzal are starting to get a little burnt out.

Lightning out with something to prove

After being swept in last year’s First Round, Tampa Bay has come back to play with a vengeance.

Not a surprise they’re the favorite to win the Stanley Cup. Victor Hedman is healthy, he’s a massive boost for the line-up. Brayden Point is outplaying his teammate and reigning Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov.

Talent-wise they outmatch the Isles in every aspect. This series is going to come down to grit. If Vasilevskiy stays hot, it’s going to be very tough for the Islanders to get to the final.

Steven Stamkos

The Captain is held out, unready to play once again. My heart breaks for this man. He’s a great player with outstanding achievements but no Cup. You have to think the boys in the dressing room will be pulling through for him. Possibly get to see him lace them up in the Finals if the Lightning can pull it off.

Last but not least, a day before the game, the Islanders were forced to fly from their “homes” in the Toronto bubble, and move into the Edmonton bubble.

We will see if this creates fatigue in the line-up from the hassle of re-situating, with no time to get ready. Or perhaps they were getting antsy in Toronto and the scenery change will create a spark. Either way, we’re in for a great Eastern Conference Final.
