Chandon Herring is a 2021 NFL Draft Prospect

Chandon Herring is an offensive lineman from Brigham Young University (BYU) and a prospect in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. Herring played in 49 games over his four seasons at BYU, including all 12 games last season.

In 2020, Herring started the majority of the time at right guard but also spent time at right tackle and left guard. With Herring in the lineup, BYU ranked 15th in rushing with 2,281 yards and 190.1 yards per game. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Herring ranks 16th among all offensive guards (20% snap minimum) with an 82.8 grade, 23rd in run blocking with an 83.1 grade, and 118th in pass blocking with a 77.0 grade.

Coming out of high school, Herring was a low-three/high-two star recruit and he committed to BYU before receiving offers from some Pac-12 schools. But prior to arriving in Provo, Herring actually delayed going to college for two years while serving on a mission trip to Washington D.C. He redshirted in 2016 and played in every game the next two years, but with no starts. In 2019, Herring started at left guard for the first half of the season, then switched to right guard for the second half.

In the NFL, Herring projects as a developmental backup at offensive tackle but could start immediately at guard. Obviously, switching from guard to tackle is typically not as simple as it is made out to be. However, Herring has extensive experience at guard. Many teams probably want to see if he can cut it at tackle, as he has great size and athleticism. Nevertheless, he could be an immediate impact player at guard in a variety of offensive schemes.
