Johnson Cleared to Race at Kentucky

It was a big week of NASCAR news which started with seven time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson being cleared to race this Sunday. Although he was asymptomatic, Johnson sat out of the race at the Brickyard. He did this in accordance with NASCAR guidelines because he tested positive for Covid-19. He received a waiver to be playoff eligible and remains in the top-16 in points which would be above the cutoff for the playoffs. After testing negative both Monday and Tuesday, Johnson will make his return Sunday.

NASCAR Releases Schedule for the Rest of the Regular Season

This past Wednesday, NASCAR released the remaining regular season schedule for the 2020 season. NASCAR continues to play the chess game of piecing together the schedule due to different state guidelines regarding Covid-19. NASCAR will be replacing tracks in states with strict guidelines. Theywill be taking these dates to tracks in states they can currently race. The newly released schedule impacts the Cup series by adding doubleheaders at Michigan and Dover, and also canceling the race at Watkins Glen. The cancellation of the race at The Glen will now move those dates to the Daytona road course for all three series. Both Xfinity and Gander Truck series were impacted due to postponing races at Michigan, Mid-Ohio, Eldora, and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The Xfinity series will now race at Road America during the Michigan Cup weekend.

Kentucky Weekend Preview

NASCAR Xfinity Series – Shady Rays 200 (7/9) & Alsco 300 (7/10)

Drivers for the Xfinity Series will be racing back to back nights starting on Thursday night. Noah Gragson and Ross Chastain will start on the front row based on the starting lineup drawing. The starting lineup for Friday night’s race will be based on Thursday’s results with a top-15 invert. Chase Briscoe has been on a roll winning three of the last four races to make five total wins on the season. After getting a top five finish last year at Kentucky, Briscoe will be the favorite both nights.

NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series – Buckle Up In Your Truck 225 (7/11)

The NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series will be on the track Saturday night for the Buckle Up In Your Truck 225. Brett Moffitt and Zane Smith will lead the field to green based on the starting lineup drawing. The current points standings has Austin Hill on top with a series leading six top ten finishes. However, watch out for the ThorSport Racing teammates of Grant Enfinger and Ben Rhodes Saturday night as they are expected to be running up front.

NASCAR Cup Series – Quaker State 400 (7/12)

The Cup Series will run their 400 mile race on Sunday afternoon. After the starting lineup drawing it will be Kyle Busch and Joey Logano leading the field to green. This season has been a two driver battle for the spot in the points standings between Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin. All eyes will be on Kyle Busch due to his lack of results as of late. Both Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch had a great battle to the finish in the 2019 race.
