Milo Eifler is a 2021 NFL Draft LB Prospect

Milo Eifler is a linebacker from Illinois, and a prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft. Eifler began his career at Washington, where he committed as a 4-star LB over Michigan, Orgeon, and 10-plus other programs, and played the 2017 season before transferring to Illinois. He started both of his seasons with the Illini, starting 17 and playing in 19 of a possible 21 games.

Eifler started five of Illinois’ eight games in 2020, and appeared in six. He totaled 27 tackles (19 of them solo), 3.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, and one pass defensed. Eifler received an overall Defense grade of 49.6 by Pro Football Focus, ranking 335th out of 396 linebackers in FBS (minimum 167 snaps played, a 20 percent minimum). He received ratings of 42.9 in Run Defense (358th), 40.9 Tackling (364th), 62.0 Pass Rush (239th), and 56.6 Coverage (234th).

In his collegiate career, Eifler finished with 96 tackles (62 solo), with 13.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, two passes defensed, and a fumble recovery. He set career-highs in 2019 with 63 tackles, 39 solo, 10 TFL, and two sacks. He started 12 and played in all 13 of Illinois’ games that year. In his lone year with Washington, Eifler registered six tackles as a backup in 13 games. He played in 34 games in his three college seasons.

In the NFL, Eifler projects as a depth linebacker who should spend some time on the practice squad or as an inactive player to work on overall ability in defending the run, specifically positioning and tackling. His current ceiling is as a back-up or somebody brought in to replace a coverage liability when facing offenses going to an empty backfield or heavily targeting multiple TEs in the passing game.

Highlights

Positives

  • Playable foot speed and quickness.
  • An asset in coverage, is able to stick with most TEs along stem and can come downhill and defend RBs catching passes to the flat.
  • Stays in front of short-field Zone assignments, stays in position to dissuade throws, and breaks when ball is delivered to nearby player.
  • Uses speed to get out ahead of outside runs, occupy blockers.
  • Capable of breaking into backfield early on handoffs.
  • Violent player, known for delivering type of hits that can fire up a defense and swing momentum.

Weaknesses

  • Has to take better lanes to the ball in the backfield and stay centered on inside runs more when playing in the box.
  • Needs to work on finishing off ball carriers in the backfield when breaking through the line, misses tackles.
  • Struggles to shed WR/TE blocks in open field to affect run plays closer to the line, more often than not blocked out of play despite possessing physicality advantage, will try to run around players rather than engage and shed, takes bad angles to ball as result.
