What’s next for Mack after suffering a season ending injury in his contract year? Indianapolis has big decisions to make this off-season.

After a week one match up where everything went wrong for the Indianapolis Colts, they received terrible news. Star running back Marlon Mack went down with an injury with 8:26 left in the second quarter in a horrible loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. It is revealed now that Mack has a torn Achilles and he will miss the rest of the season.

What does this mean for the Colts?

Losing Marlon Mack is a big hit to the Colts running back room. He was coming off a career year, rushing for over 1000 yards. Rookie Johnathan Taylor is coming off his first NFL game recording 89 total yards from scrimmage. Taylor has now been named the starting back. He will need step into a more prominent role this season.

The Colts also have two other dynamic backs Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins. Hines was the feature back when Mack went down in Jacksonville. Nyheim Hines already looks like one of Philip Rivers‘ favorite weapons on offense, recording one rushing and one receiving touchdown in Jacksonville. Wilkins on the other hand did not see the field in Jacksonville but expect him to get touches the rest of the season with the loss of Mack.

The Colts have also worked out a few free-agent running backs on Monday, one of them being a familiar foe from the AFC in years past, Lamar Miller. The Colts may sign one more running back for added depth in case another unexpected injury occurs.

What’s next for Marlon Mack?

With Mack being in his contract year, this definitely hurts his value. Mack’s tenure in Indianapolis will likely come to an end after this season. Mack’s career has been labeled by injuries. In 2019, he was finally able to stay healthy. He had never suffered an injury of this volume, but he has always been injury-prone. The injury is an unfortunate hit to a kid with high character who was looking to have a big year in 2020.
