The Chicago Bears have added some good depth on their defensive line. Here’s more on the addition of Mario Edwards.

In less than 24 hours of being waived by the New Orleans Saints, Mario Edwards has found a new home with the Chicago Bears. The veteran defensive end has agreed to terms with the Bears in a move that adds depth to the defensive line. The Bears are a bit thin along the defensive line with the decision from Eddie Goldman to opt out of the 2020 season.

Edwards Replacing Eddie Goldman?

Mario Edwards is not a replacement for Goldman at nose tackle, but he does provide a more experienced DE to pair with Akeim Hicks on the ends. At 6’3, 287 pounds Edwards has the size and skill set to play in a 3 or 4 man front. This allows the Bears to more flexible and adaptable on defense. With the signing of Edwards, Bilal Nichols will likely move inside to play the nose tackle position vacated by Goldman.

Edwards was a 2nd round draft choice out of Florida State in the 2015 draft. Due to injuries, he was unable to live up to his status as a 2nd round draft choice. The New York Giants picked him up and he finished out his rookie contract. He then signed a 2-year deal with the Saints last offseason. New Orleans did not consider him good enough to be a part of their defensive line rotation, but had interest in signing him to its practice squad.

Is This A Good Signing?

The Bears are hopeful he can be a productive player in Chicago. At 26 years of age, Edwards is still young and the talent is there. The question is can he remain healthy enough to contribute? Chicago will give him a spot on the 53-man roster, where he’ll look to answer that question.

This signing is inconsequential it won’t make an impact or show up in the win or loss column.

Seeing that Edwards is a big man at 287lbs reaching 6'3, the potential for him to finally exhibit the talent that signed him in the first place will hopefully be unleashed with the Bears. Only time will tell. This could be what the team needs as Edwards has the mobility and youth to be the front the DE needs on the field.
