Top Class Kugan Cassius

Boxing used to be considered something of a niche sport. Doubtless, it is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity. However, only a rare “mega-fight” pulls in the kinds of global television audiences that are comparatively regular for big NFL games in the States or major soccer matches in Europe.

How then, has this week’s guest on the brilliant new Brawl Boxing Podcast, IFL TV host Kugan Cassius, managed to build a boxing YouTube channel that attracts so many followers?

A Numbers Game

Kugan Cassius has made a name for himself by asking questions, rather than answering them.

Our hosts, Colm, Ciaran, and Ryan turn the tables on their guests. Kugan explains how his boxing journey started off by befriending former unified light-welterweight and WBA welterweight world champion, Ricky Hatton. Hatton is a real character and had a loyal following from a legion of fans that is perhaps unsurpassed.

Kugan describes the years of toil developing his IFL TV YouTube channel to take it from being a rather expensive hobby to eventually becoming a full- time job that could pay the bills. Since its inception in 2010, the 27k of videos uploaded on his channel has over half a billion views from 641k subscribers. These numbers tell their own story of relentless dedication, bordering on an obsession with the sport of boxing.

Kugan has become synonymous with Matchroom Sport promoter, Eddie Hearn, thanks to his long-running saga of lengthy interviews. Here, Kugan discusses the internet meme sensation dubbed ‘no context Hearn’ that has derived from his interviews and taken on a life of its own.

When the Silence is Deafening

Next, Kugan and our guys discuss the challenge of interviewing reluctant guests. How do you draw out a boxer’s true personality in front of the camera lens? We find out how Kugan discovered an employee had been less than kind to him in the past. We learn how he deals with persistent job seekers who won’t take no for an answer.

What traits does he most admire in his staff members?

Strange Encounters with Hollywood Royalty

Kugan tells listeners of how he had two encounters with A-list celebrities, Jack Nicholson and Denzel Washington, in the space of ten minutes. It did not go smoothly! The usual jocular atmosphere temporarily darkens as our guys’ quiz Kugan on the criticism young British heavyweight Daniel Dubois received after his November 28th bout with Joe Joyce. After suffering a serious eye- injury, Dubois decided to take a knee and let the referee count him out. He did so to preserve his long-term health and future career. Some said he “quit”, others that it was a smart move. We delve deeper into the debate here.

The pod ends with a discussion of the merits or otherwise of Saudi Arabia as a big fight venue. This is amid strong rumors that the highly anticipated heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could be held there next year.
