Josh Johnson is a 2021 NFL Draft Prospect

Josh Johnson is a running back from Louisiana-Monroe and a prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft. Johnson started eight of ULM’s ten games this season. He led the team in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, despite the team failing to win any games.

In those eight starts, Johnson ran the ball 88 times for 321 yards (3.6 YPC) with 4 touchdowns. He also caught 18 passes for 61 yards (3.4 YPC) with 1 touchdown. According to Pro Football Focus, Johnson finished 423rd among running backs with an Overall grade of 64.6 (67.7 Rushing, 56.7 Receiving, 57.2 Pass Blocking).

Johnson ran for over 2500 yards and 43 touchdowns in high school, He was rated as a 3-star recruit and earned scholarship offers from American Athletic Conference and Sun Belt Conference schools. Johnson elected to attend junior college first and redshirted his first year there. In his second year, he broke out running for over 1000 yards and earning Offensive MVP for his team. Johnson then elected to transfer to Louisiana-Monroe.

After playing sparingly his first year with the Warhawks, Johnson exploded onto the scene in 2019. He ran for just under 1300 yards and scored 11 touchdowns on just 201 carries. He earned All-Sun Belt Second Team Honors and ranked second in the Sun Belt and 13th in the FBS for rushing yards per game (108.2). Going into 2020, Johnson was a consensus First-Team All-Sun Belt selection.

In the NFL, Josh Johnson projects as a RB3 or RB4 on a roster. He should be able to succeed in a variety of schemes, but his size (or lack thereof) might limit him to a zone-heavy run scheme. However, he is an average receiver and below-average pass blocker, which could limit his ability to contribute on third downs immediately.

  • Good quickness and explosiveness, especially in short areas
  • Solid vision and instincts allow him to find the hole and set up blocks on the second level
  • Underestimated foot speed; rarely caught from behind
  • Solid catching the ball out of the backfield; displayed good hands and ability to make tough catches at CGS
  • Very good competitive toughness, high-effort/good motor

  • Lack of size leads to struggles running through contact; prefers to make defenders miss rather than run through them
  • Struggles in pass protection; dips his head too early and misses the block
  • One-year wonder of production against lesser FBS competition.
