The first big offseason domino has fallen, as former Houston Texans’ defensive end JJ Watt has officially signed with the Arizona Cardinals per Ian Rapoport.

Watt signs a two-year deal worth $31 million with $23 million guaranteed. It moves Watt into the 28th highest-paid defensive end in football at $16.5 Million a year, per Spotrac.

The move means the Cardinals add to their already stacked defense, with Watt joining the likes of Chandler Jones and Budda Baker.

JJ Watt announced the move himself with a picture of him on the squat rack wearing a Cardinals’ t-shirt:

Watt a Suprise!

The Cardinals are outside of the scope of teams linked with Watt, with the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Green Bay Packers. This shocked and disappointed many fans, as the cottage industry of predicting Watt’s next team dominated Twitter since Watt’s release. Just this morning, fans thought they found Watt’s Peloton account, where he had three teams listed on his profile.

The Cardinals are adding Watt into a division that is frightfully competitive and fierce, with the likes of Aaron Donald, Nick Bosa, and Bobby Wagner. The NFC West now contains four top-quality defenses, and Watt adds to that bunch. Some think Watt is declining, and he just adds experience and leadership into a young locker room for Arizona. However, Watt ranked outside of the top ten in his position only once throughout his career, according to PFF.

If Watt can produce top ten level production in Houston, which is spiraling down, the sky is the limit for the sure-fire Hall of Fame inductee in Arizona. Last season without Watt, the Cardinals were fourth in sacks and put together an above-average defense. With Watt, who knows?
