You can talk all you want about who the quarterback will be in New York, but the Jets need to find their Ken Dorsey if he wants to succeed. Dorsey currently serves as the quarterbacks’ coach for the Buffalo Bills and has been instrumental to the ascension of Josh Allen.

Much of the talk surrounding the Jets these days is about whether or not Joe Douglas and new head coach Robert Saleh want to keep Sam Darnold or draft a new quarterback. There’s one problem. Saleh doesn’t even have a staff yet, and he’ll need to find his Ken Dorsey if they want to succeed.

Josh Allen’s Third Year Jump

Drew and Chris Grier, the host and the producer of The Rockpile Report, went on the podcast Play Like a Jet to discuss the potential hiring of Brian Daboll. He talked about the plusses and minus of Daboll, but the most important topic was Josh Allen.

In that episode, they talked about the influence of Daboll on Allen, and also the importance of Sean McDermott telling Daboll to open things up for Allen instead of babying him.

There were also two crucial elements. Allen’s desire to succeed and work on his own to get better was one. The other was the work he and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey put in together.

While opening up the playbook and trusting Allen more played a huge role, the work with Dorsey, they said, was equally, if not more, influential to his big third-year jump.

New York Jets Should Raid Buffalo Bills Coaching Staff in 2021

Saleh’s Staff

Saleh hasn’t even begun filling out his staff yet. However, whether the decision is to keep Darnold or to bring in a young quarterback on a rookie deal to mold him, the Jets need to find an influential voice to work directly with him as Dorsey did with Allen.

People can talk about “perfect Shanahan scheme fit” all they want. Clearly, the Adam Gase/Dowell Loggains combination failed miserably. Having a great scheme is wonderful, but who the quarterbacks coach will be more crucial. Position coaches work more directly with players.

In the end, the right head coach is great, and the right coordinator and system are too. However, the Jets will need to find their Ken Dorsey for whichever path they choose to become a successful one.
