Early Wednesday afternoon, Georgia Junior QB Jake Fromm announced that he would forgo his Senior season and declare for the 2020 NFL draft.

Like Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Fromm has many attributes and characteristics that are eerily similar coming out of college. In high school, Fromm was documented by the Netflix show QB1: Beyond the Lights where he is often compared to Tom Brady throughout the show.

Fromm/Brady Comparison:

Both Jake Fromm and Tom Brady grew up playing the game of baseball. Fromm, a pitcher and third basemen, grew up playing little league for his local Warner Robins team where he went to the Little League World Series in 2011. Fromm was also a highly rated baseball recruit coming out of college. Brady, a left-handed hitting catcher, went a step further, getting drafted by the Montreal Expos out of high school in the 1995 MLB draft.

Jake Fromm is listed as 6’2, 220 pounds. Tom Brady is listed as 6’4, 225 pounds. Fromm has a lot of questions surrounding him and his draft stock, just like Brady did when coming out of Michigan. Both QB’s starting out as backups for their respective programs, Fromm and Brady both earned their starting spot and never looked back.

Brady won the starting job at Michigan in 1998 after playing behind then future NFL QB Brian Griese. Brady then started every game in 1998 & 1999 season, winning two conference titles, and two bowl game victories as a Wolverine captain.

Fromm won the starting job at Georgia in 2017 after playing behind now Ohio State transfer Justin Fields, a projected future NFL QB. Fromm then won a conference title, two bowl games, including the Rose Bowl in the 2018 College Football Playoff, and SEC freshman of the year as a Bulldog captain

Fromm is considered by most scouts to be an efficient pocket passer, makes all the right reads, has outstanding short and intermediate accuracy. All things that Tom Brady has excelled at. Concerns about Fromm include his arm strength, his deep-ball accuracy and his decision making to “check-down” to running backs out of the backfield often. All characteristics that Brady had coming out of college and some that he still gets criticism for to this day.

Given one of the best offensive lines in the country, along with top receivers and running backs in all of college football, Fromm has been seen as a “system-like” player to many analysts. Where have we heard that description before? Oh, yeah… Tom Brady.

Fromm/ Brady Stats:

Coming out of college, Jake Fromm and Tom Brady’s stats are freakishly similar.

Brady at Michigan: 20-5 record, Citrus (1999) and Orange Bowl (2000) wins. third in Michigan history with 710 passing attempts, 442 completions. 4th in yards with 5,351, 62% completion percentage, 5th in TD passes with 35.

Fromm at Georgia: 36-7 record, Rose (2018) and Sugar Bowl (2020) wins. fourth in Georgia history with 8,224 yards, 2nd in TD passes with 78, 63% completion percentage, all while starting 42 consecutive games for the Bulldogs.

Good fit in New England?

With rumors swirling of Brady possibly leaving the Patriots, and the lack of trust in backup Jarrett Stidham, Fromm could be a great fit. Fromm is currently the 6th rating QB in the 2020 draft according to ESPN. With the Patriots picking at #23 in the first round of this year’s 2020 draft, it’s not unreasonable to think that New England could select Fromm.

Analysis on Fromm (ESPN):

“Fromm might not match up with some of the others on this list in terms of physical attributes or arm strength, but he is a smart quarterback, timing his throws well, knowing when to take his shots and finding ways to win. His three seasons have seen no fewer than 22 passing touchdowns and no more than seven interceptions. Statistically, no campaign was better than his sophomore year, when he averaged 9.0 yards per attempt and threw 30 touchdowns and six picks.”

If Tom Brady comes back to the Patriots or even if he goes elsewhere, Fromm would have all the right pieces to excel in Foxboro. With a lot of Patriots players hailing from Georgia, a Jake Fromm and New England pairing would make a lot of sense. Players currently on the Patriots roster from UGA include RB Sony Michel, C David Andrews, LT Isaiah Wynn, and TE Ben Watson. The Patriots also drafted WR Malcolm Mitchell out of Georgia in the 2016 NFL draft so it seems like Bill Belichick and the Patriots have much respect for that program. I can see Fromm and Belichick in the film room now.

Earlier this season, Patriots RB Sony Michel spoke about Fromm, saying “Jake’s very comfortable in the pocket. He was a beast during that season [2017 UGA Rose Bowl team] and he came out and did what he did for us.” Michel went on to iterate that he believes Fromm’s talent will transition to the NFL and that he wishes him all the best.

Left tackle Isaiah Wynn was on the Georgia team that won the Rose Bowl in Fromm’s freshman year. Wynn also had high praise for Fromm.

“He came in there and he really took control of the huddle,” Wynn said. “He did great for us and was a big reason why we had success.”

Fromm clearly shows representations of Tom Brady in his game and his mantra. Fromm and Brady have a similar history and share similar characteristics. Could Jake Fromm be the second coming of Tom Brady?
