The Jacksonville Jaguars sign linebacker Joe Schobert to a five-year contract. What does the former Browns linebacker bring to Jacksonville?

The Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to a lucrative deal with linebacker Joe Schobert. Schobert spent his first four seasons with the Cleveland Browns. With Cleveland unable to pay the kind of money he was demanding, Schobert hit the open market.

Jacksonville adding a linebacker to the middle of the defense is massive. The signing should allow linebacker Myles Jack to play more of an outside role. While yes this is a lot of money to spend on a linebacker, Schobert has proven to be an excellent player the past few years. It’s a massive upgrade for the Jaguars defense.

A huge plus is how good Joe Schobert will be in coverage. Other than Myles Jack, the defense lacked linebackers with the ability to play in coverage. Schobert will come in and change that for the middle of this defense. The signing also replaces Telvin Smith, a player who was a significant piece for the defense when it was at its peak.

General manager Dave Caldwell is also showing he wants a long-term player. A five-year deal was important as this team is not looking to contend next season. There’s still going to be issues defending the pass as Tre Herdon seems to be the number one corner on the boundary. Although, it’s very likely the Jaguars look to spend at least one of their first-round picks on a cornerback in the upcoming draft.

The Jaguars get a massive upgrade at a position a lot of people had them going in the draft. The linebacker class in 2020 is top-heavy, which would mean the team would have to spend a first-round pick to get immediate impact. Jacksonville will now be looking at other positions with picks 9 and 20.

Joe Schobert is one of the most underrated linebackers in football and now gets the money he deserves. He will add some help to a Jaguars defense that has lost several key pieces these last few months.

In other news, the Jaguars are placing a 2nd-round RFA tender on WR Keelan Cole.

Along with this, we cut TE Geoff Swain, which helped us sign Joe.

Dave Caldwell finally woke up and made some moves. He made a good move in signing Joe Schobert!
