It’s time for a David Montgomery’s break out season. He’s got the skill for it, but is he up for the challenge? Bears fans think he is!

David Montgomery was drafted to be the future RB for the bears. His usage last season was average at best. When they gave him the ball, he showed flashes of what he was in college. Montgomery logged 242 rushing attempts for 889 yards and 6 touchdowns in the 2019 season. He is due for a break out season. Its David Montgomery’s turn.

David Montgomery was selected in the 3rd round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played his college ball at Iowa state where he was a standout running back. Over his career at Iowa state, Montgomery had over 6,000 rushing yards and 91 touchdowns in 4 years. The ability to be a premiere back is there.

Offensive Line

The bears offensive line had a lot of injuries. There was little to no continuity among them. It felt like every week there was someone different plugged in. The lack of continuity lead to a lack of confidence and ferocity as a unit. Kyle Long had a nagging hip injury that ultimately cost him the season. Bobby Massie had an ankle injury that made him miss the final 5 games of the campaign. The game of musical chairs played on the offensive line really had an impact on production.

Play calling

Coach Matt Nagy’s play calling was questionable. The flow of the offense never came to fruition. Play calling controls the flow of the offense. The Bears offense ranked 29th in points per game, 29th in yards per game, 31st in yards per play, 32nd in net yardage per attempt and 30th in yard per rush at 3.7.

The struggles along the offensive line contributed to the woes on offense. But they alone are not to blame. The lack of confidence in the run game was also apparent in the play calling. In turn inhibiting David Montgomery’s usage. Nagy called a run play on 54.2 percent of first downs but runs seemed non existent after that. The quarterback situation is up in the air, so the run game can bring a rhythm to be introduced to the offense. A defined and established run game opens up opportunities in the passing game.

It’s His Year to Dominate

David Montgomery has the ability to be an every down 1,000 yard rusher every year. He needs the support to get him there. Its David Montgomery’s turn, so no more gimmick play calling. Lineup under center and give him the ball going downhill. It will benefit the offense as well as give the passing game better looks.

It will be interesting to see if Matt Nagy adjusts his play calling to give the young back some confidence. Nagy should give him the ball early and often. Montgomery’s youth is something the bears play caller should use to his advantage. Running backs usually do not have pro longed NFL careers. The time is now. Turn him loose.
