Justin Herbert had an excellent rookie season, being awarded the Rookie of the Year award. The sixth overall pick will hope to build on this and help the team win more games in 2021. So how do the Los Angeles Chargers make the most of Herbert’s talent?

In 2020, the offense was not the issue for the Chargers. The defense and the capability to find new ways to lose games was the Achilles heel for the Chargers. The Chargers ranked 18th in rushing yards allowed (1,917), 9th in passing yards allowed (3,578),10th in total yards allowed (5,495), and 23rd in points allowed (426).

The defense ranked middle of the park in 2020 but it was clear to see an improvement was needed to stop these collapses. If they can get this side of the ball to be productive, then Herbert and the Chargers have a great chance for success.

They can attack this position during the offseason, either through free agency or the draft. The Chargers currently occupy the 13th overall pick and should look to acquire a defensive player.

In free agency, the Chargers have one of the highest cap spaces. Cornerbacks Darious Williams and Adoree’ Jackson are both still available in free agency and Jadeveon Clowney remains the best defensive lineman available, despite his disappointing 2020 season.

The offensive line is the biggest position of need for the Chargers, who have made their first steps towards the future with the signing of center Corey Linsley. He departs the Green Bay Packers via free agency.

This will help fill the void left by Mike Pouncey and significantly improve it. Herbert appears to be the franchise guy and the Chargers won’t want to see his potential wasted if Herbert is consistently sacked. This is the first step. There are other areas of need in the offensive line.

The Chargers will be too late to get Penei Sewell unless they trade up. Rashawn Slater is seen as the next best offensive lineman in the 2021 draft. New head coach Brandon Staley could either take Slater with the 13th pick or look into free agency once again.

Rodney Hudson represents the best lineman available in the offseason. Getting someone of Hudson’s caliber would go a long in preserving the lifespan of Herbert’s talent and career.

Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen is an elite wideout and one of the league’s more underrated players in the position. Despite this, the Chargers need more offensive talent. Mike Williams is a capable NFL player but is not a game-changer. Tight end Hunter Henry has now departed for the New England Patriots. The Chargers could look at either position in free agency or the draft.

DeVonta Smith and Ja’Marr Chase will be highly unlikely to be available when the Chargers arrive at number 13. Jaylen Waddle and Kadarius Toney are two more realistic options, with both recording a combined total of 29 touchdowns in college and over 2,400 receiving yards between them.

Free agents such as Kenny Golladay and Juju Smith-Schuster are the best two wide receivers available in free agency. Smith-Schuster represents more upside thanks to age and career stats.

Chargers fans have had a tough time of late but their replacement for Philip Rivers is far from the bust that some fans were concerned about. They have an exciting talent and need to find every way possible not to waste the career of Herbert that can be argued was the case for Philip Rivers.
