The Denver Broncos make a big addition to their roster Wednesday by trading for defensive end Jurrell Casey.

Pro Bowl defensive end Jurrell Casey is headed to Denver after the Broncos acquired him in a trade from the Tennesee Titans for a 2020 7th-round pick. Casey, an 11-year veteran, is coming off his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl season with the Titans. Last year, in 14 games for Tennesee, he had 44 tackles and five sacks.

Casey will be an expensive addition for Denver, as he has three years remaining on his contract. His cap numbers over the three years will be $11,787,500 in 2020, $12,281,000 in 20201 and $13,850,000 in 2022. However, Casey will carry no dead cap space for Denver in the eventuality that they cut him in the future.

Casey should be a great fit in Vic Fangio’s defense in Denver. Fangio has always favored veteran players in his defensive scheme. Casey has been one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL over his 11-year career and continues to play at a high level. He has also been durable, Casey has only missed five games due to injury in his career.

Casey is also a much-needed addition to a rapidly thinning defensive line in Denver. The Broncos are facing a lot of changes this off-season at the position. All three starters from last year are free agents and are unlikely to return to Denver in 2020. Casey and last year’s third-round pick Dre’Mont Jones are now the front runners to start at defensive end for the Broncos.

Being able to pick up a talented veteran like Casey for such a low price is a steal for the Broncos. And, with the ability to cut him without penalty, there is little downside to the move for Denver. Vic Fangio can use him as a cornerstone to rebuild the defensive line this year. He can also provide veteran leadership to what is becoming a younger defense in Denver.
