Will Washington week 1 defensive dominance continue against Kyler Murray and that Arizona offense? Washington must be disciplined and patient to secure this win.

Onto Week Two

After a dominate defensive led win Sunday against a depleted Philadelphia team Washington heads into week 2 against Arizona. Arizona, off an impressive win themselves, will present far more a challenge against this defensive unit for Washington especially the defensive line. While Kyler Murray was an efficient passer most his damage came off is legs and avoiding crucial negative plays. Their star receiver Deandre Hopkins accounting for nearly 33% of Murray’s targets in dominate fashion with a 14/151/0 stat line. How will this translate for the Washington Football Team defense against Arizona’s dynamic offense? What are some defensive key factors going into this game?

Defensive Front’s Biggest Test

The Washington defensive line put on a clinic against Philadelphia sacking Carson Wentz (8) the most in any 1 game of his young career. Del Rio utilized many defensive looks and stunts to keep him guessing while the defensive line unit mostly kept good gap discipline. Wentz, notorious for finding creases in a rush to escape, had absolutely no where to go throughout the game. This will be crucial against Murray and the Arizona Cardinals.

During Arizona’s week 1 matchup, the 49ers applied continued pressure on Murray but failed to contain him within the pocket. Of Murray’s 13 rush attempts, 8 came from scrambling away from pressure where he often busted a 10+ yard run. Where Murray was most efficient was avoiding the negative plays and taking what the defense gave him. While averaging just over 5yds per pass play in the air, 11 of his completion where check downs and screens.

Murray has certainly shown growth and maturity from his rookie season so team discipline will crucial on defense. The line must maintain their gap assignments while not allowing Murray outside the pocket where he will beat you. It also wouldn’t be surprising to see Del Rio utilize the strengths of Landon Collins up in the box as a spy. Keeping Murray in the pocket and forcing him to win with his arm is Washington’s best plan of attack.

Limiting Deandre Hopkins

Shutting down Hopkins is next to near impossible so obviously containment is their only hope. Hopkins will get his targets and receptions but it’s important to keep everything in front and underneath.  Utilizing a bracket coverage is most certainly going to be used with the lack of a #1 CB by Washington. As Murray’s ability to scramble and keep the play alive, Washington is going to have to often roll coverage to Hopkins. With that said a more disciplined Apke in coverage is certainly a key as Christian Kirk’s speed will haunt him.

This wide receiver core is lead by Hopkins and containing him is a key to victory, but don’t be complacent on Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald, coming off a 75 reception season, is still a capable weapon who can win through his experience. While only collecting 4 receptions on 5 targets he is still a mismatch against linebackers and nickel cornerbacks each week. Tt’s important to limit Hopkins and guard against Kirk’s speed, but they can’t get lazy in coverage against Fitzgerald.

Fans Poll

The feeling among a few fans is somewhat confident in the secondary’s ability against Arizona’s offense. Sure it stands to reason the defensive line is Washington’s strength but the secondary must execute their responsibilities affectively.

The one comment that is just so obvious yet 100% on point to this game is:

Final Thoughts

This week’s matchup will answer a lot of questions. There isn’t much to this game except the line must not only stand tall but be disciplined. The secondary has to play to their responsibilities nearly in flawless fashion while the offense needs to be mistake free. If Washington can do that, which they are capable of, they have a real opportunity for go 2-0.The prediction for this game is 23-17.
