The Yannick Ngakoue saga in Jacksonville is officially over. The edge rusher has been traded to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a second- and a conditional fifth-round pick. The Vikings now boast two top-10 edge rushers – and they’re both only 25 years old.

Exit Everson Griffen, Enter Yannick Ngakoue

It did not take very long for GM Rick Spielman to make a move to shore up the defensive line. Long-time Viking Everson Griffen agreed to a deal with the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month. After this exit, it was nearly a certainty that the team would roll with Ifeadi Odenigbo in the DE spot opposite Danielle Hunter this season. This addition to the Vikings defense definitely makes their defensive line stronger – and more difficult to prepare for if you are a team getting ready to play against them.

In order for the Minnesota Vikings to compete for a championship this season, they felt they needed to be strong on both ends of the defensive line. As a result of the trade, the Vikings will continue to employ two top-of-the-line defensive ends on the team. The tandem of Danielle Hunter and Yannick Ngakoue should instill fear into opposing teams. Ngakoue has registered 37.5 sacks in his four-year career with the Jaguars and has missed a game only once.

Yannick Takes A Pay Cut

Yannick Ngakoue’s dissatisfaction with the Jacksonville Jaguars has been seen by the entire NFL world. He did not sign his franchise tender with the Jaguars and, reportedly asked for a trade many times during this off-season. Money was not the issue, as he was looking for a fresh start on a new team. He got his wish, but will give up a solid $5 million to sign a restructured one-year tender with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Final Trade Details

The Minnesota Vikings acquired DE Yannick Ngakoue in exchange for a second-round pick, along with a conditional fifth-round pick. The fifth-rounder would become a fourth-rounder if Yannick Ngakoue is a first-ballot Pro Bowl player this season. It would become a third-rounder should the Vikings win the Super Bowl this season.

Overall, it was a great trade for both sides. The Minnesota Vikings have added a young and talented pass rusher that head coach Mike Zimmer can pair across from star DE Danielle Hunter for years to come. The Jacksonville Jaguars stockpiled draft picks for their future in what seems to be a rebuilding year.

Welcome to the Minnesota Vikings, Yannick!
