Blake Jarwin will finally get his shot at TE1, as Dallas signed him to a three year deal worth up to $24.25 million and $9.25 million guaranteed on Monday.

The Cowboys were expected to give the restricted free agent a second-round tender. However, it is now clear they wanted the 25-year-old tight end for longer than one year. It appears that the three-year contract will go on top of the second-round tender, locking Blake Jarwin up for four more seasons. This came after it was initially reported that the deal was for only three seasons.

Blake Jarwin in 2019

2019 was a challenging season for Jarwin, as he was stuck on the depth chart behind Jason Witten. Cowboys fans clamored for more snaps for Jarwin as he only received 38% of the snaps in 2019. He flashed tons of potential as he caught 31 balls for 365 yards and 11 yards per catch. He ranked eighth among qualifying tight ends with 1.82 yards per route run.

Jarwin displayed tons of ability after the catch as well, showing speed and fluidity. He has his deficiencies as a blocker, but offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was able to make good use of his receiving abilities, and it is now apparent that new head coach Mike McCarthy sees the potential in Jarwin.

You can almost never complain about locking up a good young piece for four more years, especially with the flashes he displayed in 2019 and the rapport he showed with Dak Prescott. After seeing Austin Hooper reset the tight end market in Cleveland with $23 million guaranteed over four years and $10.5 million per year, it’s nice to see Dallas getting ahead of the market with Jarwin.

Now this wasn’t the extension from the Cowboys everyone is waiting for, similar to when La’el Collins and Jaylon Smith unexpectedly received big extensions. Jarwin is just the first piece to the puzzle of the 2020 off season so far, and Jerry and Stephen Jones have plenty of work to do with Amari Cooper, Byron Jones, Robert Quinn, and many others on the free market right now.
