Looking to build depth in the secondary, the Browns take a chance on the Cowboys’ former training camp standout Donovan Olumba.

The Cleveland Browns continued rebuilding their roster today, signing cornerback Donovan Olumba. Terms of the deal have yet to be announced.

Donovan Olumba is 6’2″ 205lbs and 24-years old. He began his college career at Division II Alderson-Broaddus, playing for the Battlers for three seasons. At Alderson-Broaddus, he had six interceptions and also played on special teams as a punt returner. He also blocked two kicks.

After his three years at Alderson-Broaddus, he walked on at FCS Portland State. After redshirting in 2017, he became a starting cornerback in 2018. He had 21 tackles and seven pass breakups in his one year at Portland State, earning honorable mention honors from the Big Sky Conference. Following the season, he went undrafted but was signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.

Olumba was a standout in camp in 2018 with the Cowboys. He finished the preseason tied for the team lead in pass breakups.

It wasn’t enough to make the team, but it did earn Olumba a spot on the team’s practice squad for the 2018 season. Following 2018, Olumba signed a futures contract with the Cowboys and returned to training camp with the team in 2019. He played well again in camp in 2019, including an interception return for a touchdown against Tampa Bay.

Once again, he did not make the team out of camp but signed to the practice squad. The Cowboys finally signed him to the active roster before the season finale against Washington. He played 32 snaps on defense and six on special teams but did not record any stats. The Cowboys released Olumba on Wednesday.

Olumba is likely only a training camp body for the Browns but will at least have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot. He is someone who has shown talent but not the ability to put it all together so far. Perhaps this will be the opportunity he needs to make an NFL roster out of training camp finally. If it is, this could end up being a solid signing by Cleveland. If nothing else, Olumba is a lottery ticket worth taking a risk on.
