Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates III has been elite this season and is proving that fans should be excited about his sky high potential.

Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates III has taken the league by storm in the early part of the 2020 NFL regular season. Bengals fans and media have been raving about rookie quarterback Joe Burrow but Bates has been just as good. If not better.

Bates was drafted out of Wake Forest in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After a solid training camp, he was named starter for the 2018 season opener. From that point forward, Bates has been a defensive anchor for the Bengals.

High Grades

Jessie Bates received a 79.9 grade in his rookie season according to Pro Football Focus. As a result, that put him as the eleventh best safety in the NFL. Definitely nothing to sneeze at.

Then in 2019, Bates came in with sky high expectations. However, he struggled early on in the year but he eventually found his rookie season form. Bates finished with an overall grade of 61.2 from PFF for his 2019 campaign. Though the grade and his performance didn’t meet expectations, Bengals fans and media alike still felt that the best was yet to come for the young safety. So far in 2020, they have been right.

Jessie Bates has taken his game to new heights in 2020. So far this season, Bates has been the best safety in football according to PFF. His PFF grade through Week four of the 2020 NFL season is 87.2 and he has a coverage grade of 89.3. He was on PFF’s team of the Week for Week one vs. the Los Angeles Chargers and Week four vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars. Its truly incredible the season that the third year safety is having.

Best player on the team?

Jessie Bates, not Joe Burrow, has been the Bengals best player so far this season. That should give Bengals fans hope. The NFL is a passing league. Therefore, the Bengals having a strong secondary is more important now than ever. If Bates continues this elite trajectory, he will be able to elevate the play of the other defensive backs in the Bengals secondary. That should be incredibly exciting for Bengals fans. On the offensive side of the ball, you have centerpiece Joe Burrow for the next ten years. In the defensive secondary, you have rising star Jessie Bates to build around. There might not be a lot of wins right now for the Cincinnati Bengals. However, they are coming and Jessie Bates will be a big reason why.
