The Chicago Bears have several needs to address across the roster. Unfortunately, due to cap space, they aren’t expected to be big players in free agency.

Free agency is looming in the coming week, and the Chicago Bears have multiple positions that need addressing. Among them on the offense in no particular order is the offensive line, tight end, wide receiver, and quarterback. Defensively speaking, linebacker, safety, cornerback, and edge rusher are the positions in need of an upgrade. Right now, the Bears have just over $24 million in cap space per Spotrac and will require roughly $6 million of that for rookie contracts. As always, contracts can be re-worked, players extended, or cut to create more cap room. Also, the impending CBA agreement would tack on potentially $12 million more for the Bears to utilize.

In Sheil Kapadia’s Top 100 NFL Free Agents article with destinations for each player, he had one top free-agent signing with the Bears. That free agent would be Vonn Bell, safety. Chicago has little cap space to work with in 2020, along with needing to bring in a veteran quarterback. But in the meantime, Bell fills a hole on the Bears’ defense and will be a nice compliment to Eddie Jackson.”

Safety is a position of need for the Bears, and Bell would be the ideal candidate to pair with Jackson. Also, it would allow for Jackson to return to prowling the secondary and resume the ball-hawking ways he displayed during his first two seasons, compiling eight interceptions, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and five touchdowns off of turnovers. It would leave Bell to patrol the line of scrimmage and corresponding areas, a similar role to what he did in New Orleans, where he averaged 87 total tackles per year to go along with an average of 2 sacks a year.

It would be a welcome signing, but holes remain in several other areas to fill only with draft picks. Ryan Pace will need to be creative in addressing all these needs at the beginning of the new league year. What tricks does he have in store for this offseason? We shall soon see.
