The Canes get the job done against Pitt. Nothing fancy just a hard fought victory against a seemingly hungry Pitt defense. D’eriq King and the offense looked ordinary. The canes defense looked better. Let take an in depth look at those two phases of football.

He is human

D’eriq King proved to be human after all. Hats off to the Pitt defense that stepped up to the challenge and made this offense look ordinary at times. The Canes rushing attack could not get going against the Pitt front seven. Ultimately though, the Canes fire power was just too much for Pitt to keep bottled up.

Miami’s rushing attack was held to 2.6 yards an attempt on 42 rushes. Credit to the coaching staff for not abandoning it. But more credit to Pitt for bottling up one of the Canes strengths. Cam’Ron Harris seemed frustrated at times. He only had 24 yards on 12 attempts.

Will Mallory however, had a two touchdown game ultimately being the deciding factor in this game. His second score, one could actually give credit to the fact the Canes never went away from the running game. The offense showed run action and Mallory leaked out the backfield being left WIDE open streaking to an untouched score. Will Mallory was the main focus in terms of tight end with Brevin Jordan being out due to an injury he suffered against Clemson. Mallory’s success allowed the canes to get the job done.

Pass protection issues

In my last piece I mentioned the Canes offensive line does good enough to protect the QB. In this contest they did not. The Pitt defensive line was all over the backfield. Frustrating King and it appeared he was running for his life at times. The Canes best chance for success lie on D’eriq King’s shoulders and his health depends on it. So, the offensive line must do better going forward.

Much better

The defense played much better in this matchup. Sure, it was against Pitts offense. But the way defenses could be evaluated is the level of intensity and effort they play with. They were flying around and playing with a significantly evident chip on their shoulder. Maybe coach Diaz flipped that switch? And of course Bubba Bolden is a STUD!!

The Canes had 5 penalties for 55 yards. Not a overwhelming amount, but most of them were in really important situations. Being able to get off the field will help this defense be aggressive. Also allowing them to play hard and fast. So, when you have an offense against the ropes with a 3rd and long. A personal foul that gives them a first down is completely deflating. Let alone on 4th down give up a roughing the kicker to give them a first down.

Discipline is something that is under the microscope here. If we were talking about Canes defenses of old that were shutting teams out. Maybe you could look the other way with some of those head scratching penalties. Not with this defense. Those type of penalties could cost you the football game.

The Canes however are on the right track. They need to stay the course and take it one game at a time. One win at a time. Running the table has to be the ultimate goal for this team. Get better every week. College football playoffs are attainable and should be in their plans. But, canes get the job done.
