The Dangerous Dawgs of Cleveland

Unlike the off-season of 2019, this year the Cleveland Browns are being one thing that we never associate with the modern Browns. Quiet. Dangerous is the predator that is silent and Cleveland will be just that in the 2020 NFL season. However, are the Browns ready to take that step?

The famous quote that is associated with Cleveland’s quarterback Baker Mayfield is that he woke up “feeling dangerous”. The Browns team is a scary sight for sore eyes. However, the Browns have been quiet this off-season. Last season, all that was being talked about was the acquisition of Odell Beckham Jr and how the Browns were a dead cert to win the Super Bowl. Similarly, this season that sort of hype is being held about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their new quarterback Tom Brady.

With the pandemic sweeping across the world, players at the Browns have been unable to be in the public eye. Fans haven’t seen Baker Mayfield in countless commercials and other players voicing their opinions. Reporters in February told us that Baker is taking a far more mature, silent approach to his game. Respect to Mayfield for identifying weaknesses in his character. The “New Baker” looks great.

Chances to win the division?

Cleveland will have a lot to overcome in the 2020 NFL season. The division holds a dominant Baltimore Ravens team and a strong Pittsburgh Steelers franchise that has their star quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, returning. The arrival of Joe Burrow to Cinncinati Bengals may also ignite some life into what has been a poor organisation in recent memory.

Excellent roster

Offensively is there any other team out there that is better right now? Cleveland seems to have two of everything, whether it be dominant running backs in Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt or star-studded wide receivers in Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry. Let’s not forget the big strong tight ends with newly signed Austin Hooper and David Njoku. Reinforcing the offensive line to protect Baker has been key in their off-season decision making, bringing in Jack Conklin and drafting Jedrick Wills. The 2019 Browns would have a different story with a better offensive line.

Defensively the Browns are youthful, but with power. The cornerback tandem of Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams will improve this season, Myles Garrett is a top-five defensive end in the league and, again, they have drafted high potential guys in Grant Delpit and Jacob Phillips. Reading this roster would make any organisation instantly envious. Newly-appointed head coach Kevin Stefanski must be licking his chops right now. Cleveland’s defense is poised to make a big impact in 2020.

Loud, brash teams haven’t always been historically successful. There is always loud players in every organisation but this New England Patriot way of being buttoned up and silent in the media is a blueprint for how every team should be in the NFL. No distractions, no leaks, the only goal being. Winning is all that matters. The Browns have a great future.
