After bringing Philadelphia its first Lombardi Trophy, Doug Pederson is relieved of his duties as head coach.

Yes, the Philadelphia Eagles and Jeffrey Lurie decided to fire Doug Pederson. This should not come as a surprise, as the offense since 2017 has been below average. The offense ranks 26th in the NFL this year, which after watching, seems a little generous. Pederson’s record isn’t anything to put in the record books, but he did boast a 42-37-1 record with Philadelphia. But there seems to be some dysfunction among the Eagles, as rumblings of Pederson being fed up with how the front office seemed to be interfering with Pederson’s decision making. Ian Rapoport tweeted:

If this is true, the Eagles may have a hard time finding one of the top coaches available. However, it is time for the Eagles to bring in a new coach, one who can hopefully fix Carson Wentz. But, if Howie Roseman continues to be the general manager of the Eagles, the rebuilding process may take longer than anticipated.

What’s Next?

This offseason will be the busiest Jeffrey Lurie has endured. With a head coaching and defensive coordinator vacancy, Lurie is going to have his hands full. Not to mention, he will have to deal with the terrible cap situation his franchise is in (thanks Howie!). So, hopefully, Lurie decides to demote Roseman to the financial aspects of the franchise and bring in a new general manager to handle the draft and football operations.

The biggest challenge for Jeffrey Lurie however, is finding a new coach that can fix and mold Carson Wentz back to his potential. The firing of Doug Pederson indicates that Lurie and Roseman are all in on Wentz. Now, they just need to have a great draft, which, if we’re being honest, is another reason to fire Roseman, because his draft records are questionable.

Where will Pederson Go?

Doug Pederson’s phone might be ringing off the hook for the next couple of weeks. There will be teams clamoring to get a Super Bowl-winning head coach in their building, the most obvious being the New York Jets. Doug Pederson and Joe Douglas have a very close relationship and it would not surprise anyone if Douglas called Pederson the minute after hearing the news.

If Eric Bieniemy leaves the Kansas City Chiefs to take a head coaching job, Pederson could return to the fold with his old mentor, Andy Reid. Working with Patrick Mahomes for a few years could help wash off any possible stink from the Philadelphia situation. However, it is possible that Doug may want to take a break from coaching in the NFL and return back to coaching in high school. Whatever his decision, Doug Pederson should be able to get a job anywhere.

Time to Reflect

Although the Eagles were right to fire Doug Pederson, let’s not forget what an accomplishment Pederson achieved with this team. After all, he is the only head coach in the history of the franchise to win a Super Bowl! Therefore, thank you for all that you gave to the Eagles and the city of Philadelphia, Doug, and we wish you the best in your future.
