The Cleveland Browns have signed former Atlanta Falcons tight end, Austin Hooper, bolstering their stout offense. What does he bring to Cleveland?

The Cleveland Browns make the first significant splash in free agency adding former Atlanta Falcons tight end Austin Hooper. The deal makes Austin Hooper the highest-paid tight end in the NFL  making close to $11 million annually. Adding Hooper gives Baker Mayfield another weapon in an offense that already features Odell Beckham, Jr., Jarvis Landry, and David Njoku receiving wise and with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt at running back.

Hooper was a part of a loaded Atlanta Falcon offense in which he took some of the spotlights from superstar receiver Julio Jones. 2019 was Hooper’s best season as a pro when he racked up 787 yards on 75 receptions and 6 touchdowns. The two-time Pro-Bowler received significant interest from several other teams, most notably San Francisco, Washington, Green Bay, and Chicago. Unfortunately for those other franchises, Cleveland was willing to pay the most.

How will Cleveland utilize Austin Hooper?

In Cleveland, Hooper has the opportunity to help propel the offense to one of the best in the NFL. Already loaded at receiver and running back, Hooper was the last piece of the offensive weapon. His reliability over the middle provides Baker Mayfield with the reliable 2nd or 3rd read. Basically, Hooper finds himself in a similar situation where the offense features big-name receivers (Beckham & Landry/Jones & Ridley) but with better running back options (Chubb & Hunt/Freeman). Look for Hooper to make an immediate impact and become Mayfield’s favorite target.

New head coach Kevin Stefanski looks to utilize two tight ends in his offense as he did with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019. Adding Hooper gives the Browns two tight ends with different skill sets.
