Breathe easy Chargers fans – Austin Ekeler is still a Charger after signing a new contract.

Austin Ekeler’s Contact

The Los Angeles Chargers running back has reportedly reached an agreement ahead of free agency with team officials. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter the deal is for 4 years worth $24.5 million dollars with $15 million being guaranteed.

Production of Austin Ekeler

After a breakout season with the Chargers due to an increased workload from Melvin Gordon’s hold out, the running back from Western Colorado University has certainly made a name for himself. Ekeler became an integral part of the offense under Head Coach Anthony Lynn. At age 24 and playing in all 16 games for the Chargers the offense saw Ekeler take the ball and not look back.

The 2019 season saw Ekeler finish the year with a total of 1550 yards from scrimmage. Compiling 993 receiving yards and 557 rushing yards with a total of 11 touchdowns. Ekeler proved last season he could handle the extra touches as he recorded a total of 224 which is the most of his career. Having a running back that can catch passes as well as eat up yards on the ground is vital in today’s NFL.

What’s next?

With it being reported that Melvin Gordon will test free agency, this is a welcomed signing for all Chargers fans. As of now its unknown who exactly will be joining Ekeler in the running backs room. We’ll all have to wait until free agency begins for that to become more transparent. Its clear from the appreciation shown from the Los Angeles Chargers fan base Ekeler is becoming a fan favorite due to his high work rate at practice and in games.  With a willingness to do whatever it takes to win the game I’m sure we’ll see more powder blue number 30 jerseys in the seats for 4 more years.
