The AFC East division has belonged to the New England Patriots for decades. The last division champ that was not coached by Bill Belichick was the 2008 Miami Dolphins.

The Buffalo Bills haven’t won the AFC East since the 1995 season.

With the Bills leading the Miami Dolphins by one win and the Dolphins facing the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, can any team stop the Buffalo Bills winning the AFC East?

Improvements In Josh Allen

Bills quarterback Josh Allen had arguably the best game of his career on Monday Night Football. In the 34-24 win over the San Francisco 49ers, Allen threw for four touchdowns and 375 passing yards. He also had an 80% completion percentage (32 from 40), and no interceptions.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs was traded to the Bills from the Minnesota Vikings during the offseason and this has helped Josh Allen immensely.

Diggs is fifth in the league this season in passing yards. He is also the joint league leader in receptions. This shows the trust Allen has in Diggs.

Allen has also been able to throw to other wideouts such as Cole Beasley, John Brown and Gabriel Davis.

Beasley is 18th in the league for receptions. He is also 19th in the league for receiving yards and has the same amount of touchdowns as Diggs.

John Brown was having a good season before his season-ending injury.

Allen has a plethora of talent around him, which has seen him already throw for more touchdowns and passing yards than his previous two seasons. This season, Allen has so far thrown for 3,403 passing yards and 26 touchdowns this season. He has managed to record these numbers with a poor running game alongside him. Devin Singletary is Buffalo’s leading rusher (544), with Allen in second place (322).

The Bills backroom staff has shown they are clearly behind Allen and head coach Sean McDermott by giving them exactly what they need.

Defensive Issues

Buffalo had the third-best total defense in the league in 2019. This season, though, they rank 21st. This shows a decline on that side of the ball.

We saw the defense slide this season when the Bills lost 42-16 to the Tennessee Titans in week 5.

Crucially, we have seen the Bills win and lose many shootouts. This shows both the strengths in the offense coincided with the weakness of the defense.

Can Miami or New England Steal The Division Crown?

It would be typical Belichick and New England for them to go on a run and take home the AFC East. It was not out of the realms of possibility until their Thursday night 24-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The chances are now verging on impossible for them to win the division.

The Bills face the Pittsburgh Steelers next, who are 11-1.

Pittsburgh has the second-best defense in the league for yards allowed and has an offense that can easily trouble the Bills on their day.

Denver won’t be easy either.

Their record suggests this is not the case but with a linebacker in Bradley Chubb, he has the potential to get to any quarterback. He is eleventh in the league for sacks this season (7.5). Safety Justin Simmons is also tied for fourth in the league interceptions (4).

These could both trouble Buffalo. Two losses for the would bring their record to 9-5.

This would be the chance for the Miami Dolphins to capitalize.

The Dolphins face the Chiefs on Sunday as massive underdogs. A Chiefs win is likely but if the Dolphins can beat the Patriots in week 15, they could move to 9-5.

Should the Bills lose the next two games, this would leave a tie at the top of the AFC East division (Bills have the head-to-head tiebreaker).

The Bills play the Dolphins in Weeks 16. This is a crucial game in the AFC East. Despite their excellent season so far, the Bills have little experience in these situations.

Although it is unlikely that the Bills will be caught by the Patriots, the Dolphins have to be considered a team to worry about.
