After a disappointing 2018 season for the San Francisco 49ers, excuses were done for John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan. It was time to be in “win-now mode”, however they needed to get a few more pieces to make this a stacked roster. They had cap space still, and a ton of flexibility. Not to mention the number two overall pick in the draft. They were probably one of the best-positioned four win teams ever.

Free Agency Splash

John Lynch wanted to be aggressive early and on March 13th he did, signing Kwon Alexander to a 4 year 53.5 million dollar contract. Kwon was the linebacker they needed, and Tampa let him walk because they were going to draft Devin White. The 49ers knew they could spend big money on defense, because of how good Shanahan is on the offensive side of the ball.

Speaking of offense, Tevin Coleman is back with Shanahan as he signed a 2-year contract. Coleman played with Shanahan when they both were in Atlanta, and Coleman joins the very loaded 49ers backfield. Next, they would go back to defense, giving Jason Verrett a 1-year deal, low risk, and potentially high reward. The problem has always been health with Verrett and not his talent.

This next move takes the cake for their offseason however as they acquired Dee Ford from the Chiefs. Ford was coming off a breakout 13 sack and seven forced fumbles season. They wanted to really create a scary defensive line and with Ford, they would do just that. They now had Arik Armstead, Deforest Buckner and Dee Ford.

The Draft

With the number two pick in the draft, the 49ers would select Nick Bosa out of Ohio State. He was the best player on their board and would go along with the other really good players on their defensive line. Next in the second round, they got Deebo Samuel, a great after the catch receiver in their offense. Those two would be the big standouts in the draft, they would later take Mitch Wishnowsky as a punter in the 4th round.

Overall this was the kind of win-now offseason they needed, as they intend on making a run this year. Jimmy Garoppolo is now healthy, and they made a great splash in free agency. There were now going to be no excuses this year for the 49ers.
